Rev’d Maureen – Licensing and Installation Service in Shropshire

Rev’d Maureen will be licensed and installed today in her role in the Benefice of the Meres and the Meadows. Please pray for her along with John and the family today especially as she starts her new role. The service takes place in the Church of St Michael and All Angels, Welshampton at 2:30pm.  We wish her every success and blessing as she begins her ministry in Shropshire.

Praying during the interregnum

It is really important that, during our time of interregnum,
we pray regularly for our Church and for the appointment of our next Vicar. You may wish to use this prayer:

God our Father,
you have welcomed each one of us in Jesus
and called us to be his body in this place.

Send us your Holy Spirit,

at this time of uncertainty and change,
to fill us with vision and energy;
make us faithful in prayer and worship,
that we may be true to our calling
to bring new life to our community.
Guide with your heavenly wisdom
those who are to choose a new Incumbent for this parish,
that the one whom we receive
may be a wise and gentle shepherd of your people:
ready to serve us with joy, to build us up in faith,
and to lead us by example in loving obedience to your son,
our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Amen
.

FAREWELL REV’D MAUREEN & JOHN

Shortly, we shall be saying farewell to our brilliant and much loved Vicar of #Meltham Rev’d Maureen Read as she moves to take up a part time role in the Benefice of The Meres and Meadows, Shropshire, in the Diocese of Lichfield.

Everyone is invited to say farewell to both Rev’d Maureen and John at a special Songs of Praise service. Please join them
for a good sing song of some of their favourite hymns at St Bartholomew’s, Meltham on Sunday (10th) at 4:30pm and afterwards for a PARTY in the Church Hall opposite.

Rev’d Maureen was originally planning for retirement in July 2018 when she will reach 20 years of ordained ministry – it seemed a good time to begin the next chapter of her life. Instead, as has happened so often, God had other plans and she said ‘Yes!’ to Him.

The benefice consists of four Parish Churches, but on a much smaller scale than Meltham. It is a part time incumbency (0.6) and the total population is 1600 with the biggest school having 73 children – fully subscribed!

The message she received through her prayers was that she needed to slow down but not stop!

So, the time has come to say farewell. They will be sadly missed by all the church family across the Parish and people in the wider community.

Please pray for Maureen and John as they begin the next chapter in their lives, and come along to give thanks, and say farewell – ALL WELCOME.

Christ Church Helme

Christ Church is known locally as “The Rainbow Church”. It was built in 1859 in memory of a son of Charles John Brooke, who had died at the age of 27. To find out why it was given its name come along during the Heritage Weekend.
This lovely country church has three special features, the first being that it has no stained glass windows: the plain glass being left to show God’s handiwork of the natural surrounding trees and countryside. The second feature is the spire, which is the only wooden shingle spire in Yorkshire and only one of two in the North of England. The third feature are the original painted texts on the walls inside of the Church, they are all extracts from the New Testament.   The gate from the car park and a bench in the graveyard are dedicated to Thomas Wroe a soldier from the 3rd Yorkshire Regiment who was killed in Afghanistan aged 18yrs. Tom is buried in the graveyard.

History Trail of St Mary’s Church and Village

St Mary’s is located within the pretty and peaceful hamlet of Wilshaw, having just 60 homes. The church was built as a memorial to Mary, daughter of Joseph and Eleanor Hirst. Mary died in childbirth in 1859 and the foundation stone was laid in 1862 by her mother. The building is Romanesque in style with a central porch, bell tower and spire, which separate the church from the Sunday School and the Church House.
